Banana for Diarrhea

Evie has been suffering from loose bowel movements a few days now. We suspect that the culprit is her teething. She's been drooling a lot and is working on with few teeth coming in so soon. I just realized that bananas are good for treating diarrhea. I do not know the medical explanation. I only heard it from my relatives before. So we tried giving her banana more than she consumes everyday. Thankfully, I no longer have to worry feeding her banana because when she was younger, she refused eating it.

Bananas actually helped treat her diarrhea. After she ate a lot last Saturday, her stool the next morning was still soft, but already solid. So much better compared to the past days where it was more wet and watery. According to Barbara Bradley Bolen, Ph.D., "Bananas are a good choice to settle an upset digestive system. The high level of potassium in bananas helps to replace electrolytes that may be lost by severe bouts of diarrhea. Bananas are also rich in pectin, a soluble fiber  that helps to absorb liquid in the intestines and thus move stool along smoothly. Bananas also contain a good amount of inulin, another soluble fiber. Inulin is a  prebiotic - a substance that promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria (probiotics) in the intestinal system."

Sadly, Evie has still loose bowel movement at present. We took her to the doctor this morning to make sure that there's no serious thing that we should be concern about regarding her bowel movement. Aside from her teething, we have another theory what caused her upset stomach and is already taking action on it. We still give her bananas and I made her rice porridge for her meals. Hopefully, the probiotic powder that we mixed in her food, the bananas, and starch she gets from rice will help bring back her happy tummy.
